9. Kohlwald

The extensive forest area between the Rothenberger Höhenweg ridgeway and the Schwenderbach creek is known as the “Kohlwald” (coal forest). The name most likely goes back to the charcoal burner who settled in the middle of the forest in the 18th century and built his kiln to produce charcoal. He logged the forest around him, so that a glade was created, which was later called „Hans-Jörgen-Dell“.
This deforestation was related to the increasing efforts in the 18th century to search for ore deposits in this area, for which there is numerous historical evidence.
The area of meadows and fields that adjoin the Kohlwald in an easterly direction on the Hainbuchentaler slip-off slope was given the name „Am Kohlwald“.
